Salonabend & Book Launch: Sinophonecene? – Tracing Environmental and Cohabitational Perspectives in Contemporary Chinese Art Freitag 4. Salon Evening & Book Launch: Sinophonecene? – Tracing Environmental and Cohabitational Perspectives in Contemporary Chinese Art Friday, 4 December 2026 · C*SPACE Creative Hub What does it mean to share the world with others, humans, plants, animals and other forms of life? And how can contemporary art help us rethink our relationships with one another and with our environment? To conclude our salon series Bewohnbare Welten|可栖之地 (Habitable Worlds), organised in collaboration with the Heinrich Böll Foundation, we bring together questions explored in the previous three salons – from language, home and social participation to our relationship with nature – with perspectives from contemporary art in the Sinophone world. We are delighted to welcome the editors Franziska Koch, Cila Brosius and Nora Wölfing to our Pop-Up Teahouse stage for a conversation about their book Sinophonecene?, published by Palgrave Macmillan in 2026. The book brings together debates surrounding the Anthropocene with artistic and curatorial practices situated in the Sinophone world. Seven academic case studies and four conversations with emerging and senior curators explore questions of habitability, ecological entanglements and the cohabitation of different forms of life. Challenging essentialist and nationally framed notions of “Chineseness”, the contributions open up transcultural perspectives on the relationships between humans, plants, animals and technoid beings. The chapters take us from “SEEDS: Habitability as Question and Praxis” through “BRANCHING OUT” and “SAPLINGS: Curating (with) Inhabitants—Inhabiting (with) Curators: Conditions, Perspectives, Challenges” to “COMPOSTING”. The editors will share insights into the making of the book, introduce the concept of the “Sinophonecene” and present selected perspectives from its chapters. Artists discussed in the book include amongst others Tong Wenmin, Tang Han, Su Yu Hsin, Vzela Kook, Lu Yang, Zheng Bo, Mia Yu, Sponge Gourde Collective, Li Huayi, and Yang Yongliang. In addition, Bettina Freimann (Curator) will be present and engage in the discussion about her contribution to the book.
